Talking Books
As a Subregional Talking Book Library, the Pensacola Public Library offers free service by mail to blind and physically handicapped adults and children who have difficulty reading ordinary print or holding or turning the pages of a book.
The Talking Book Service is a FREE national service which provides eligible library patrons with books and magazines. These are in Braille or recorded form, on discs or cassettes. Special playback equipment is also provided as a part of the service.
Readers may choose recent best sellers, westerns, classic novels, romances, mysteries and a large variety of nonfiction such as history, politics, science, cookbooks and biographies. Children's books are available, too.
Who is eligible?
Anyone, adult or child, who cannot use ordinary printed materials because of visual or physical limitations is eligible. The qualifying condition may be temporary.
What does the service cost?
Nothing! All materials, including the equipment necessary to play the discs or cassettes, are free. Postage to receive and return the books is also free. Machine repairs are free, too.
How does one apply for the service?
Call us at 436-5060 or 436-5065, or visit us at the Pensacola Public Library, Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM. We have applications and information readily available. To certify, your application must be signed by a medical professional, a teacher, librarian, or health and welfare professional.
What else does the library offer?
Assistive devices for those with visual limitations, including video magnifiers which enlarge printed materials on a video screen, and a Kurzweil personal reader which converts print to electronically synthesized speech, are available for use in the downtown Pensacola Public Library. Video magnifiers are available at some branch locations as well. Please call in advance to reserve this equipment.
The Library adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act and will make reasonable modifications for access to its services, programs and activities. Call 436-5060 (TDD: 436-5063) to make arrangements, at least 48 hours ahead.
